“I think one of the reasons I’m popular again,” said legendary crooner Tony Bennett, “is because I'm wearing a tie. You have to be different.” Fashion experts agree – your necktie can make a strong statement. And the colour that you choose says a lot about your personality and your intentions. Take politicians as an example. A red necktie says, “I’m in charge,” whereas a blue one says, “I’m listening.” At the 2018 G20 Summit in Argentina, President Trump wore his trademark red necktie. A year later, at the Summit in Osaka, it was pink. Did his advisors recommend him to soften his messaging?

Here is a list of what necktie colours are communicating:

RED aggressiveness / strength / authoritative

YELLOW positivity / confidence / intelligence

BLUE trustworthiness / seriousness / stability

GREEN practical / energetic / balanced

ORANGE enthusiasm / open-mindedness / creativity

PURPLE individuality / self-assured / wisdom

PINK good communicator / approachable

BROWN reliable / down-to-earth / practical

In general, lighter-coloured neckties make the wearer appear more friendly. If seriousness is what you are after, wear something dark-coloured. When travelling abroad, be sure to do your homework. Wearing a purple necktie in China suggests you are an excessive spender and, a white one means you are in mourning. In India, merchants wear yellow neckties. Before you’ve even had a chance to introduce yourself, your necktie has dispatched important personal information.
