Jim Lambie, an ex rocker from Glasgow, Scotland, is among the few artists who encourages people to walk all over his creations. He is best known for the lively floor installations that he produces using extra-durable, semi-gloss, vinyl tape. With a team of assistants, Lambie begins by applying the tape at the outer edges of a given space and establishes a graphic pattern that gradually converges in the middle. Varying widths and colours of tape transform an otherwise utilitarian surface into something visually dynamic. "Is the room expanding or contracting?” says Lambie, "…covering an object somehow evaporates the hard edge of the thing and pulls you towards more of a dreamscape". In recent years, gallery and museum floors throughout the world have been mesmerizing audiences with Lambie's hypnotic handiwork.
