Pixeland

It takes many pixels to make one entire digital image. The total, as they say, is the sum of its parts. That is the concept behind a new public plaza called Pixeland in Mianyang, China. Designed by the Shanghai-based architectural firm 100architects, Pixeland consists of 1500 sq. metres nestled in a residential development. The basic “pixel” used in the project is 5 x 5 sq. metres. The colourful grid of pixels interlocks small amphitheatres, lounge areas, sloped lawns, and picnic tables with a horse-themed playground complete with slides, climbing areas and trampolines. Marcial Jesus, founder and CEO of 100architects, says, “What I find interesting about the project is the combination of pixel functions within nature and among themselves. The arrangement creates a unique combination that, as a whole, becomes a perfect platform for interactions not only among kids, but also adults.” Whether viewed up close or from far away, Pixeland has become a real crowd- pleaser.
