mel-uh n-koh-lee-uh  /  Late Latin  /  1685

Melancholia is a mental disorder which causes a state of depression. The word is derived from two Greek words – melan meaning black and khole meaning bile. It was once believed that depression was a result of a person having an excess of black bile, one of the four humours found in the human body.
